Windows 10 Upgrade

What is the free upgrade to Windows 10?

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as a free upgrade for compatible devices that are running genuine Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 Update.

The free upgrade is a full version of Windows (not a trial or introductory version) and is available until July 29, 2016. Once you upgrade, you’ll have Windows 10 for free on that device.

No doubt, if you are using windows 7 or 8, you will have seen one or both of these by now;

Do I want to upgrade?

This is a difficult question, as it depends on a number of things.

If you have a relatively new PC or Laptop which doesn’t use “legacy” software apps, and all your printers have verified windows 10 drivers available from the manufacturer, it shouldn’t cause any issues (key word there is Shouldn’t)

Do you have old software applications that you still use? – are they windows 10 compatible?

Are all of your hardware devices, printers, etc windows 10 compatible? We have seen a few machines have some issues after the upgrade, and needed to be rolled back – which can take an hour or more to do.

Can I go back to Windows 7 or 8 later?

If it’s been less than a month since you’ve upgraded to Windows 10, you’ll be able to go back to your previous version

If its been longer than a month since the upgrade, the only “rollback” is to reinstall the old version of windows and all your apps from scratch.

Can I “Opt-out”?

Microsoft are really pushing windows 10, but there are ways to disable the upgrade. There is no guarantee that MS wont “slip” this upgrade into some other update later, but in its present form it can be disabled and stop bugging you every time you start up.
